Trials of a new weight loss drug are nearing completion with (according to the company responsible) some pretty promising results.

Zafgen the manufacturers of the consumer friendly named ZGN-433 ran a double-blind placebo-controlled study of 24 obese women and found that each had lost an average of 2lbs per week over a 1 month period.

The women also claimed to feel less hungry and less likely to snack between meals as the trial went on.

The New Scientist described the results as ‘stunning’ considering that the women continued to eat normally and were not given exercise advice or any special instructions.

The drug is set to target 25% of the adult British population – 1 in 4 are now adjudged to be very over weight or obese.

It is not in great detail how the drug is supposed to weight apart from it breaks down fat – previous research has suggested the more overweight you become the harder it is for the body to shift it because the body becomes ‘programmed’ to make and store more fat.

Scientists at Zafgen believe ZGN-433 blocks an enzyme, which prevents several genes from functioning properly. This means they no longer activate other genes that stop insulin from working effectively.

Is Zafgen ZGN-433 Worth Waiting For

The drug will most likely be available via the prescription only route, meaning it will not be available to buy over the counter restricting a large proportion of the UK population.

It is hard to get too excited about Zafgen when there are several products that exist right now and have a proven level of working success.
